George Rusden was born in Surrey, but in 1835, when he was sixteeen, his father was appointed a chaplain at Maitland, in New South Wales, and the family emigrated to Australia. As well as visiting and working for a time in China, Rusden worked for the civil service in Melbourne. His 1883 History of Australia and its companion text, . It had a mixed reception, since Rusden had taken some of his sources' statements at face value, including some about a New Zealand politician, John Bryce, in response to which Bryce sued for damages.
