The zoologist John Gould, who had been born in Dorset, was known as the author of books on the birds of the Himalayas and of Europe, when he set off on an expedition to Australia in May 1838. This resulted in the production of his greatest work, The Birds of Australia, which was published in London in monthly parts, beginning in December 1840 and ending in 1848. He is now recognised as the 'father' of Australian ornithological study, and the first to study and document in detail the bird life of this large and varied land mass.
