[Preliminary entry] Attempts to resolve differences between Huguenots (French Protestants) and Catholics through the marriage of the Protestanmt Henri de Navarre (the future Henri IV of France) to Princesse Marguerite, daughter of Catherine de' Medici and sister to king Charles IX, were rendered valueless when hundreds of Hugenots were massacred in the streets of Paris on 224th August 1572. In the aftermath, many Huguenots emigrated to England.
