The Duke of Anjou defeats the Huguenots at Jarnac, where the Prince of Conde is killed. The principal Huguenots subsequently meet at Cognac to elect the Duke of Vendome, son of the Queen of Navarre, as their leader and to appoint Admiral de Coligny Commander-in-chief.
