This was precipitated by Felipe II who forbade the use of Moorish dress, language and customs. They revolt against oppressive treatment, desecrating churches in Granada. In retaliation Philip II orders the slaughter of the Moorish population which is carried out by the Marquis de los Velez and Bishop Deza. Philip later calls his half-brother, Don John of Austria, to subdue the Moors.The Moors were defeated and expelled in 1571 and the region was resettled with Spaniards.
