A conspiracy of Huguenots, under the leadership of the Prince of Conde, attempts to seize King Charles IX and the rest of the royal family from their chateau near Meaux. The young king and his mother Catherine de' Medici only escape with difficulty, and flee back to Paris. This failed conspiracy serves as the pretext for new acts of violence, provoking the second War of Religion in France.
