Edward Dorn's major publications include his Collected Poems 1956-1974, his novel By the Sound (1971), and other prose works including a brilliant, loving documentary exploration of The Shoshoneans (1966), a book which reveals the same complete identification with dispossessed originals or strangers as is found in his poems like “Mourning Letter, March 29, 1963” dedicated to the starved miners of Hazard, Kentucky which ends “Oh, go letter,/keep my own misery close to theirs, associate me with no other honor.” Gunslinger (1968-1975) is his masterwork and absolutely in touch with the tradition of the American long poem.
