Elizabeth Taylor, novelist and short-story writer, was born at Reading, Berkshire, on July 3rd, 1912, the daughter of Oliver Coles, an insurance agent, and Elsie, née Fewtrell. She attended The Abbey School – formerly Reading High School, but renamed in 1914 after the school where Jane Austen had briefly been a pupil. After leaving in 1930, Elizabeth worked as a governess, and later as librarian of Boots' Library in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. In 1936 she married John William Kendall Taylor, the director of a confectionery firm; they had a son and a daughter. After the war, in which John Taylor served in the RAF, the family settled in Penn, Buckinghamshire, where Elizabeth spent the rest of her life. She died of cancer on November …
