Garth St. Omer was born in Castries, Saint Lucia on 16th January 1931. He had a younger brother, Vincent, and was raised by his mother, who died in Saint Lucia in 2002. He attended St. Mary’s College, the only secondary school for boys in the country at that time. After completing his studies there, he became a junior teacher at the college and taught there for seven years. In 1956, St. Omer moved to Jamaica to attend the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he pursued a Bachelors of Arts degree in French Literature.
