Vachel Lindsay's lifelong concerns with national unity can be traced to his birth in Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln's hometown. His father, Vachel Thomas Lindsay, was a physician from Kentucky. His mother, Catharine Frazee Lindsay, was active in the Campbellite church and, although also from a southern background, remembered Lincoln with admiration. “Mason and Dixon's line runs straight through our house in Springfield still,” confessed Lindsay, “and straight through my heart.”
