Louis-Armand de Lom d’Arce, better known as the Baron de Lahontan, was a French soldier who served in New France (the French colonies of continental North America) from 1683 to 1693 and published three best-selling volumes inspired by his experiences in the colony. Lahontan’s œuvre provided Europeans with a fresh perspective on colonial affairs and gave an account of life in New France that differed substantially, in both tone and content, from earlier ecclesiastical writing such as the Jesuit Relations – the detailed annual chronicles of Jesuit missions in New France.
