For a businessman, Adriano Olivetti exercised an unusual influence on twentieth-century Italian literary culture. He was a publisher, a writer and an industrialist at the Olivetti office machines company, which was founded by his father Camillo Olivetti in Ivrea (Piedmont) in 1908. As General Director of the family business from 1933 to 1938 and President from 1938 to 1960, Adriano Olivetti was a public intellectual who actively supported the arts, humanities and social sciences. In 1946 he founded the Edizioni di Comunità [Community Editions] publishing house, which promoted the integration of literary and scientific cultures.
