Maria Savi Lopez was one of the first Italian scholars interested in folklore, with particular attention to the the Italian Western Alpine area. She mainly learned this subject in the field, interviewing local peasants and collecting their records. In addition, she later developed an interest in Northern European folklore.

Maria Lopez’s date and place of birth are not certain. According to Angelo de Gubernatis, the renowed linguist and orientalist with whom she collaborated for many years, Lopez was born in Naples around 1850, while Carlo Villani, in his biographical book Female Stars, maintains she was born in 1846.
