Angelo Fortunato Formiggini was born in Collegara, a suburb of the city of Modena, on June 21, 1878. He was descended from a Jewish family that had been settled for centuries in northern Italy, in the ancient Este Duchy encompassing Ferrara, Modena, and Reggio Emilia. His ancestors had grown rich by serving as the Duchy’s jewellers and, in the period between the French Revolution and the foundation of the Kingdom of Italy (1861), they had gradually used their capital to invest in land. This wealth was handed down to Pellegrino Formiggini, who married his cousin, Marianna Nacmani. They had five children: Sofia, Giulio, Emanuele, Giuseppe, and Angelo Fortunato.
