Louis-Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811) was Commander of the first French expedition to circumnavigate the globe (1766-69), but he is possibly better known by gardeners for the vine named in his honour (the bougainvillea). Geographers and residents of Papua New Guinea will recognize that the name Bougainville was given to an island and an autonomous region, while scholars of eighteenth-century France will probably be more familiar with a response written by Denis Diderot to his account of a stay on Tahiti: Diderot’s Supplément au voyage de Bougainville circulated from 1772 but was finally published in 1796.
