A highly respected and productive author of the second half of the nineteenth century, Mario Pratesi was born in the sleepy town of Santa Fiora in the Monte Amiata area of Tuscany. He was a sensitive child. Unlike his four brothers, decorated military men all, Pratesi demonstrated early on his unsuitability for marching with them through military campaigns. His own natural penchant lay in literary pursuits, and by his early twenties he eagerly left Siena, where his family had taken up residence, with hopes for upper-level studies. He headed for Pisa where, however, he was unable to register at the university; instead, he frequented known places where students were wont to gather for discussions and debates.
