Born in Santiago, Chile in 1949 to a middle-class family, Diamela Eltit studied pedagogy and literature at the University of Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. The 1973 Chilean coup d’état and subsequent dictatorship (1973-1990) led by General Augusto Pinochet had a considerable impact on Eltit’s formation as an artist and a writer. At the time of the coup, Eltit, twenty-four-years-old, was teaching high school castellano (Spanish) and studying literature at the Universidad de Chile where she took part in the legendary Estudios Humanísticos (Humanistic Studies) seminars taught by renowned Chilean writers Nicanor Parra, Enrique Lihn, and Ronald Kay.
