Classified by the New York Times (May 2016) as one of the five rising post-revolution Arab writers, Shukri al-Mabkhout (also transliterated Chokri Mabkhout) has lately occupied a privileged place in the Tunisian literary scene. At the age of 53, al-Mabkhout published his debut novel Ettalyani [The Italian] (2014) which won the 2015 prestigious International Prize for Arab Fiction (also known as the Arabic Booker). The importance of the Prize, al-Mabkhout contends, resides in its capacity to bring "the Arab novel international exposure that was missing" as it opens venues for Arab writers "to surpass the boundaries that were blocking Arab literature from the world" (Interview by Karen Leigh)…
