Context

Born in Macerata in 1928, Marisa Volpi graduated from secondary school in Rome, where she also attended an acting academy. As a young woman, she was active in the Communist Party but left the party after the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956. Volpi earned a degree in Philosophy from the University of Rome and an advanced degree in Art History from the University of Florence, where she studied with the distinguished historian of Italian art, Roberto Longhi. A specialist in modern and contemporary European and American art, Volpi taught for many years at the “La Sapienza” University in Rome.
