SuAndi was born in Hulme, Manchester, in 1951, and is of Nigerian and British (Anglo-Irish) heritage. Describing herself as “the Nigerian daughter of a Liverpool mother” (2009, 34), SuAndi identifies as a very Northern, working class, Black artist. Her career is as multi-faceted as her identity. She was a dancer and model, managed a successful restaurant, and was employed as a social worker when she made her first appearance as a performance poet in 1985. She continued her modelling, dancing, and social work alongside performances, until 1987 when she became a full-time performance poet, live artist, and writer.
