Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt is one of the most successful contemporary French-language writers: in 2001 he was awarded the Grand Prix du Théâtre de l’Académie Française for his entire activity, and in 2008 he was awarded the Prix Goncourt de la Nouvelle for Concerto à la mémoire d’un ange [Concerto in Memory of an Angel]. In 2012 he became a member of the Académie royale de langue et de littératures françaises de Belgique. Born in France in 1960, Schmitt became a Belgian citizen in 2008.
