Rosario Fiallos Oyanguren de Aguilar was born on January 29, 1938 in León, Nicaragua. Her father, Mariano Fiallos Gil (1907-1964), was a famous writer widely considered the founder of the autonomous university system in Nicaragua. Fiallos Gil held various government roles, including a brief stint as Minister of Education for Nicaragua. Aguilar’s mother was Soledad Oyanguren y López de Aréchaga (1902-1995), from a Spanish Basque family that emigrated to Nicaragua in 1921. Aguilar was the middle of 5 children.
