Ángel Rama was a central figure in Latin American Studies. Yet this statement does not convey the effective role he played in the cultural integration of the continent. His theoretical originality defined the main trends of Latin American cultural studies after the 1980s; his work as a publisher, journalist and teacher had an immense impact in the circulation and diffusion of Latin American literature; and his feverish letter writing and travels to give lectures and participate in conferences all over the continent created a solid intellectual network that survived him in many ways.
