Tito Vespasiano Strozzi was the son of the Florentine Nanni Strozzi, the military commander made famous by Leonardo Bruni’s funeral oration for him, and Costanza Costabile of noble Ferrarese stock. He served as a ducal official to the Este lords of Ferrara and was granted close access to their inner circles. Both he and Marquis Leonello were students of Guarino da Verona, the famous humanist educator, who had lived and taught in the Strozzi household during his time in Ferrara. Strozzi also had a personal relationship with Leonello and appears as one of the partners in dialogue with Leonello and Guarino in Angelo Decembrio’s De Politia litteraria [On Literary Polish], along with his brother Niccolò, his grandfather Alberto …
