Frank Miller’s name became commonly known to the public at large while working within the American superhero comic book industry. This occurrence is no small feat considering that the identities of artists within the field are systematically downplayed by an industry striving to promote their characters. Nevertheless, Frank Miller’s work has been central to making superheroes and graphic literature into objects of serious interest to adult readers and academics. In his treatment of trademarked superheroes such as Batman and Daredevil, Miller reshaped the tone of superhero comic books in the 1980’s, synthesizing traditional tropes of the superhero narratives with the fatalism of hard boiled detective fiction.
