Louis Aimé-Martin is perhaps best known as the principal editor and the first biographer of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. It is through his marriage to Bernardin's widow, Desirée Pelleport (although the spelling of her maiden name varies), sometime after the writer's demise in 1814, that Aimé-Martin came into possession of the acclaimed author's original manuscripts. With unrestricted access to Bernardin's literary legacy, and with intimate knowledge of his personal life, it was not long before Aimé-Martin was able to compile his widely-studied and much-contested Essai sur la vie de Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre [Essay on the life of Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre] (1818). …
