Richard William Church was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on 25 April 1815 and raised in Florence, Italy. On his father's death in 1828 the family moved to Bath, England. He went to Oxford in 1833 and there he met John Keble and John Henry Newman. In 1836 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and was elected to an Oriel fellowship in 1838. He was ordained deacon in 1839 and took up a tutorship.

Church produced countless reviews and articles. These focus primarily upon issues of theology, although he had a secondary interest in history. When he left Oxford in 1853 in order to be ordained priest and take up the living of Whatley in Somerset, friends of his collected his writings into Essays and Reviews (1854). In 1871 …
