Poet, editor, and essayist Bliss Carman (1861-1929) forms part of the Confederation Group of poets, which included his cousin Charles G. D. Roberts, Archibald Lampman, Duncan Campbell Scott, and William Wilfred Campbell. Known as the “Poet Laureate of Canada,” he published more than twenty collections of poetry during his lifetime as well as several works of non-fiction. He also helped shape the direction of late 19^th Century American verse through his work as an editor on several prominent literary periodicals. A writer of international reputation, Carman's poetry transformed the psychological landscapes of early Canadian verse into modern lyrics of mystical revelation.
