Julia Margaret Pattle Cameron was born in Calcutta (today, Kolkata), India on June 11, 1815. Her father, James Pattle, worked for the East India Company, and her mother, Adeline Marie de l’Etang, was the aristocratic daughter of a former page of Marie Antoinette, who had been sent to India under suspicion of being somewhat too much in the French queen’s favour. A family of six surviving daughters, the Pattle sisters were known for their beauty, their closeness, their unconventionality, and their enthusiasm for the arts. Members of the British colonial upper class in India, they were well educated.
