John Bury was born in County Monaghan, Ireland in 1861, the son of scholarly parents. While an undergraduate at Trinity College, Dublin, he produced, in association with the distinguished classicist and Professor of Ancient History at Trinity, J. P. Mahaffy, an edition of The Hippolytus of Euripides (1881). He had studied at the University of Göttingen and, deeply influenced by the German Idealist School, soon turned to historical study. His first published essays appeared in 1886, in the English Historical Review, and heralded an impressive output that, according to a bibliography published in 1929, amounted to some 369 articles, reviews and books by his death in 1927.
