Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote about 70 novels (the number varies based on publisher’s combinations), mostly science fiction, but he is best known for his adventure stories about Tarzan. “Tarzan is legend, fable, adventure, bedtime story – a character known the world around”, begins the introduction to The Teenage Tarzan (Galloway 2010, 7). The character of Tarzan so grabbed the popular imagination that, worldwide, films based on this character, named or unnamed, authorized or not, have exceeded triple digits. Burroughs also tried his hand at writing other types of fiction, westerns and contemporary fiction, for example, with less success.
