An artist of multiple talents and remarkable versatility, Apirana Taylor’s work bridges cultures, languages and forms of expression. Of Maori and Pakeha (European) background, Taylor identifies himself as a Maori, with affiliations to Ngati Porou, Te Whanau-a-Apanui, and Ngati Ruanui, and his work is most strongly concerned with the problems that beset urbanised Maori society. His writing draws on and promotes values of community and a confidence in the possibility of extending tribal traditions through bicultural experimentation.
