Alyse Gregory, author of numerous critical, literary and feminist essays, was, for a couple of years in the twenties, Managing Editor of the Dial, at the time New York’s most prestigious literary and art journal. She also wrote three modernist novels that explore the individual consciousness through multiple voices: She Shall Have Music (1926), King Log and Lady Lea (1929), and Hester Craddock (1931). In these novels she imaginatively transforms her own experiences into literature in order to portray the limitations that society imposed on women.
