Eduard Limonov was a writer who continuously drew inspiration from his own life story. It is therefore not always possible to separate fact from fiction in an autobiographical narrative mode that is often deliberately self-contradictory, and aims to keep the reader wondering as to what really happened and what is imaginary. According to the Limonov-disseminated information (for which some independent corroborating evidence can be found) his father was a military officer in the troops attached to the Ministry of the Interior, and Limonov grew up in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov, where he appears to have worked as a fitter (1960), a smelter in a foundry (1963-64) and a bookseller (1964-67).
