Cristina García is at the forefront of a wave of publication of, and interest in, U.S. Latino/a writers – especially women writers including Julia Alvarez, Sandra Cisneros, and Ana Castillo – that began in the early 1990s. She is one of the best-known Cuban-American writers today, both in the U.S. and in Cuba.
García was born in Havana, Cuba on July 4, 1958, to Francisco M. Garcia and Esperanza Lois García. She is one of three children.
