William Douglas Home (pronounced Hume) was born in Edinburgh on June 3rd 1912. He was descended from two very old aristocratic Scottish families, the Douglases and the Homes, who were united in the 18th century by the marriage of a Douglas heiress to a Lord Home. From time immemorial, these valiant knights had been fighting against the King of England over the ever changing border between the two countries.
William Douglas Home was the fifth of the seven children of Lord Charles Douglas, thirteenth Earl of Home. One of his brothers, Sir Alec Douglas Home, was to become Queen Elizabeth II's Prime Minister in 1964. William had a particularly happy childhood with his loving family in their ancestors' castles.…
