Greg Simison was born in Guildford, Surrey, England in 1946, to Omand Jack Simison and Barbara Bonner (neé Larcombe) Simison. In 1954 the family moved to Canada, where Simison finished his schooling; he attended a variety of elementary schools in Manitoba and Ontario because his father, who served in the Canadian Army, was posted several times. Simison attended Queen Elizabeth Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Kingston, Ontario, but left after grade ten. After serving three years in the Canadian Navy, he returned to school in 1969 in Calgary, Alberta, attending an Adult Vocational Centre and completing grades eleven and twelve in one year.
