[Preliminary entry.] Chang-rae Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea, on July 29, 1965. His family moved to the United States in 1968 and he grew up in an affluent suburb of New York where his father was a practising psychiatrist. He started his university education at Yale, before moving to the University of Oregon where he gained his MFA in writing. Following graduation he worked for a year as a Wall Street analyst before devoting himself to writing.

In 1995 his first novel, Native Speaker, was published to great critical acclaim in North America and Britain and went on to win the PEN/Hemingway Award and the American Book Award. The novel is a detective story about a young Korean-American man who works for a private …
