Erna May Brodber was born on the 20th April, 1940, in the village of Woodside, St. Mary, Jamaica. Her parents were Ernest and Lucy Brodber, a farmer and a schoolteacher respectively. Brodber’s family were very involved in the local community and promoted an active cultural life at home, encouraging reading, writing, and music-making (O’Callaghan, 1986: 71). Brodber attended Woodside Elementary School before moving to Excelsior High School in Kingston. After graduating in 1958, she worked in the civil service and then as a teacher in Montego Bay.
