George Szirtes has achieved literary prominence as a poet, translator, editor and broadcaster. His poetry develops from early experiments with a lyric voice working in late-modernist, pastoral and confessional modes and bearing the traces of influences from major figures like Auden, Eliot, and the “Movement” and “Group” poets as well as contemporaries like Martin Bell, Peter Scupham and Peter Porter, to an increasing concern with large formal patterns and sequences (notably extended sequences of sonnets), enabling the examination of historical, political and personal experiences through language carefully aware of its own provisional, limited status.
