Andrei Georgievich Bitov was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) on May 27, 1937 and was raised there. During World War II, in 1941-42, he was evacuated to the Urals and Uzbekistan. He went to high school in Leningrad, and then attended the Leningrad Mining Institute (the Geology Prospecting Department). He had various jobs as a stevedore, a lathe operator, and was on construction brigades when he was a soldier, in 1957-58, before he was discharged on medical grounds in 1958. He returned to the Mining Institute and graduated in 1962. In 1965-67, he attended advanced courses in cinematography in Moscow. Bitov’s fis publication was in 1960.
