Angela of Foligno was born around 1248 in an Umbrian town about ten miles from St. Francis’s own Assisi; the title of her book calls her, simply, “Lella from Foligno”. The only certain date in Angela’s biography is the year of her death, 1309; she is buried in her hometown Church of Saint Francis, the same place where she dictated her experiences to her scribe. We know very little about Angela’s life: she was married with children, experienced a conversion as an adult, lost within a short span of time her mother, husband, and children, became a Third-Order Franciscan, and devoted her life to prayer and service to the poor; an unnamed woman accompanied her faithfully to the end—she may have been a servant who eventually …
