Andre Dubus was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the youngest child of a middle-class French Catholic family. He was educated by the Christian Brothers in a parochial school that emphasized writing, including the writing of fiction. As an English and Journalism major at nearby McNeese State University, he continued to explore his emerging talent. After graduation in 1958, he served six years as a Marine Corps officer while he married and began a family. Dubus has said that the death of his father in 1963 allowed him the freedom to resign from the Marine Corps and devote himself entirely to writing, and in the winter of the following year, he moved with his wife and four young children to Iowa City, where he enrolled in the University o…
