Theodor Storm was a North Frisian poet and prose writer, renowned primarily for his evocative representations of the bleak atmosphere of the North Frisian coastline and the sombre mentality of its people. He is most remembered for his first and last novellas, Immensee [The Lake of Bees] and Der Schimmelreiter [The White Horse Rider]. They embody his development from an early lyric prose, still indebted to Romanticism and the introspective sentiment of the Biedermeier period, to a sterner, restrained realism underpinned by gothic motifs and a mythical conception of nature.
