Heinar Kipphardt was an acclaimed playwright, novelist and poet in the German and the international literary scene of the 1960s and 1970s and beyond. With Peter Weiss, Rolf Hochhuth, Alexander Kluge and others, Kipphardt was a celebrated proponent of the documentary theatre, and he achieved international fame practically overnight with his play In der Sache J. Robert Oppenheimer [In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer, 1964] which was translated into more than fifteen languages and is still performed today on stages around the globe.
