Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, a leading voice of contemporary American theatre, was born on May 10, 1964 in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Her father was an army colonel, whose career took the family across the United States and abroad (Germany) and her mother was a teacher, who nourished in her three children a love of reading and writing. While Parks completed elementary and secondary education in the United States (following her father’s assignments to North Carolina, California, Kentucky, Texas, Vermont, and Maryland) she enrolled in junior high school in Germany, where her father was stationed at the time.
