Andrew Cecil Bradley was a noted Shakespearean scholar. He was born on 26 March 1851 in Surrey, to the Reverend Charles Bradley and his second wife, Emma Linton. He was educated at Cheltenham College, then Balliol College, Oxford.
Bradley’s distinguished academic career that began at Balliol can be summarized by an observation made in 1986 by Terence Hawkes. In That Shakespeherian Rag he wrote of the “earnest efforts” to “unseat” Bradley’s literary legacy (31).
