John Murrell was born in 1945 in the United States and is one of the most successful playwrights in Canada, with a long record of plays continuously produced and continuously in print. He has served as Playwright in Residence for both Alberta Theatre Projects (1975-76) and Theatre Calgary (1981-82), as Associate Director of the Stratford Festival of Canada (1977-78), as Head of the Banff School of Fine Arts (later the Banff Centre for the Arts) Playwrights Colony (1986-89), as Head of the Theatre Section of the Canada Council for the Arts (1988-92), and currently as Artistic Director/Executive Producer of Theatre Arts at the Banff Centre.
