John Herbert, the child of John and Gladys (Kirk) Brundage, was born in Toronto on October 13, 1926. He is known primarily for Fortune and Men’s Eyes, a play written in 1964, the first commercial production of which in New York City in 1967 led to its publication, translation and extensive production world-wide. Herbert wrote many other plays, most of which remain unpublished. Indeed, the success of his best-known work overshadows his other contributions to Canadian theatre which, besides plays, include service as a director, designer, stage manager and, most importantly, artistic director of some of the country’s earliest professional theatre companies.
