Sigmund Freud was born on 6 May 1856, in Freiberg, Moravia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in the Czech Republic)). His father Jakob was a wool merchant, and Freud's mother, Amalie, was Jakob's second wife. Jakob had two sons from his first marriage, and at the time of his birth, one of Freud's half-brothers was already married and had a child. Freud had two brothers (one died in his first year) and five sisters from his father's second marriage. In 1859 Freud's family moved to Leipzig, then settled in Vienna in 1860, where Freud went to study medicine at the age of 17 in 1873, and completed his final examinations in 1881.
